Scribner Installs Original Abstract Sculpture and Garden

Scribner Middle School (SMS) visual art students designed and created an abstract sculpture and gardens for the school. Art teacher, Karen Crawford and ArtSeed artists, Julie Schweitzer and Cody Presley, collaborated with SMS art students to create the sculpture. This art piece includes student created drawings of band and orchestra students with their instruments, which were later developed into scaled-down, core foam sculptures. These small sculptures were turned into a life-size cardboard sculpture, and then traced and cut out of versatex. Ideas kept evolving to creative an 4’ x 8’ sculpture.

This project also included installing a garden of plants that are native to Indiana. Guest speakers, Marilee Burnside and Paul Reed spoke to students about gardening and plants to help guide students to what plants they would like to include in their gardens.

We would like to thank the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County for their support. Without their $15,000 grant, none of this would be possible. You can now see the sculpture outside the school’s entrance to the performing arts auditorium.
