Self-Care Tips

The NAFCS Social Workers and Case Managers wanted to reach out and offer support during this time to all staff and students. As you navigate these next few weeks of uncharted territory in education as well as society, it is important to take care of yourself. These uncertain times can cause a lot of stress and anxiety for everyone including staff, parents, and students. Below are some tips from the CDC and SAMSHA for maintaining self-care during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Types of Self-Care:

  • Sleep, stretching, walking, healthy food, yoga, rest
  • Routines/schedules, stress management, forgiveness, compassion, kindness
  • Boundaries, support systems, positive social media, communication, asking for help, time together
  • Time alone, meditation, yoga, connection, nature, journaling, sacred space

Tips for navigating these troubling times:

  • Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Share your concerns and how you are feeling with a friend or family member
  • Maintain health relationships and build a strong support system
  • Make time to unwind and remind yourself that strong feelings will fade
  • Try to do activities you usually enjoy
  • In times like these, there is a lot of information circulating. Watch, listen to, or read the news for updates from officials. Always check your sources and turn to reliable sources of information like your local government authorities.
  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories.
  • Try to do enjoyable activities and return to normal life as much as possible and check for updates between breaks
  • If distress impacts activities of your daily life for several days or weeks, talk to a counselor, clergy member, doctor, or contact the SAMHSA helpline at 1-800-985-5990.
