School Board News... July 9, 2007
July 10, 2007
posted by Dave Rarick

A Passing of the Guard… Smiling and excited, Mrs. Becky Gardenour accepted the unanimous nomination as the new school board President at last night’s board meeting. Mrs. Gardenour, whose term runs from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2008, served as Vice-President for the past year. Mr. Don Sakel, the former board President, turned the proceedings over to Mrs. Gardenour who then confirmed the nominations of Neal Smith as Vice President and Trisha Byrd as secretary.

Mr. Smith served as the secretary for the past year and Trisha Byrd served as a member. Both have been instrumental to policy and proceedings over the past years. Also serving on the board as members and strong supporters of education are Mr. Roger Whaley – a lifelong educator in Floyd County and retired Director of Technology; Lee Ann Wiseheart, who is very involved and passionate about youth groups and education; and James Zoeller, a member who strongly supports children and public education.

Mrs. Gardenour, who frequently works with children in Floyd County, has a zest for education and a passion for children. She has proven to be a fervent supporter of public education, teachers and all facets of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation. She also had high praise for Don Sakel – a former principal at Floyd Central High School and lifelong educator in Floyd County. The school board is in good hands with Gardenour at the helm and passionate members at the table.

Academy finds Swarens to Assist Boutin… The board of trustees welcomed Tamara Swarens, a teacher from Greenacres Elementary in Clarksville, Indiana, as the assistant principal at the Academy of New Albany. Swarens has worked at Greenacres since 2000 and at Clarksville Middle School for a year prior to that. She has extensive experience in special needs education, safety, school improvement and Title I. She joins Teri Boutin, former assistant and now principal, as the leadership core of CANA – a pre-school thru 3rd grade Academy where early intervention is the focus.

Brooks and Board Wish Bennett Well… Dr. Dennis Brooks and school board President Becky Gardenour presented Dr. Tony Bennett a “Nobody Does it Better” award later in the evening. Dr. Bennett is leaving the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School at the end of July to become the next Superintendent of Schools at Greater Clark. Mrs. Gardenour expressed everyone’s emotions and made it very clear that they would miss Dr. Bennett’s leadership and presence in the New Albany-Floyd County Schools. Dr. Dennis Brooks characterized Dr. Bennett as a very loyal, dedicated employee. He also emphasized Dr. Bennett’s sense of humor.
